The foundation
In the heart of Kirklees, a story of dedication and craftsmanship began in 1947 when Wilfred Roberts Sowden left his job at W Waterhouse Plumbers to pursue his own path.
With a vision – but not a single job in hand – he rented a small workshop behind The Bull pub in Liversedge.
This bold move marked the inception of W R Sowden & Son, a name that would grow to become synonymous with quality plumbing and heating services.
Wilfred, a man of distinct character, known for his signature bib and brace, white shirt, and tie, embarked on this journey with nothing but his skills and determination.
He never got around to painting his new workshop, but his commitment to his craft painted a legacy that spans over 70 years.
Growth and expansion
The business saw its first expansion when Wilfred’s only son, James William Sowden, joined in 1948.
Their collaborative efforts led to significant contracts, including the plumbing works for Dale Lane, Stubley, and Firthcliffe Estates.
They adapted to the times, transitioning from lead piping and cast iron to more modern materials.
The subsequent generations, David Sowden and Anthony Sowden, further propelled the family business, ensuring that W R Sowden & Son evolved with the changing landscape while maintaining the core values of exceptional service and quality.
